The first phase of the Duck Project resulted in three physical outcomes: the Duck Handbook, the Duck Toolset, and the Duck Badges. Each object is designed to communicate and celebrate the personality traits of Duck People, while encouraging the formation of a community where these individuals can feel understood and connected. Together, these pieces focus on communication and belonging for those who embrace a wide range of skills, even if they’re not specialists. The project aims to remind Duck People that being a generalist is normal, valuable, and nothing to be ashamed of. At the same time, it also helps people outside the community better understand and appreciate this kind of personality, encouraging empathy and inclusion.
These three objects use the same visual systems, black stroke, with some part of the illustrations using a dash, an incomplete line. The yellow colour was filled not entirely to the edge, and a risograph printing was used to give the imperfect, unfilled effect—the “almost good” or “almost perfect” or “imperfect” visual language. The styling of illustrations also looks general, aiming to look ordinary, just like how we look at the duck person.
— The Duck Handbook
The Duck Handbook is a key item for Duck People and those who want to better understand them. More than just a guide, it serves as a tool for expression, communication, and pride in being a generalist. Its pocket-sized format makes it practical, while its tone and content reflect the unique personality and mindset of a Duck Person.
— Tools Design
The Duck Toolset is a complementary role to the Duck Handbook, offering a playful, yet functional representation of the many skills Duck People carry. Much like a Swiss Army Knife, the toolset includes random objects that encourage the wearer to proudly carry them as part of their identity.
— Badges Design
To communicate that achievements are recognised through visual symbols by using playful badges to celebrate everyday abilities. These badges encourage people to proudly showcase the different roles and skills they embody. In addition, the badges foster a sense of belonging within the community, giving Duck People a way to visually connect with one another.
Reflecting on these design, the Duck Toolset and Duck Badges can function similarly, as communication tools that carry meaning beyond their physical form. They can also be interpreted as fashion objects in a wearable, performative context. When all three objects are used together, the Duck Handbook tucked into the pocket of a shirt, the Duck Toolset hanging from the belt, and the Duck Badges pinned on the chest, they serve as a visible expression of embracing one’s full, varied self. This combination reinforces the importance of being comfortable with imperfection, encouraging Duck People to take pride in their multifaceted nature. It also helps those outside the community better understand what it means to be a Duck Person, fostering empathy, connection, and a sense of shared identity.
